King K Kratom rebuilt its store with compliance built in, not bolted on.

Small-batch kratom extracts and energy shots made in Austin and tested to the milligram. The move to Shopify had to carry the age gate, the state rules and every batch certificate with it.

01 The challenge

King K Kratom make small-batch extracts and energy shots in Austin. Every batch is tested and published to the milligram, which is the whole argument for buying from them rather than from a shelf. Customers who care about that come back, and the customer list is one of the more valuable things the business owns.

On WooCommerce the compliance work was a stack of plugins.

An age gate from one vendor, state shipping rules from another, and warning copy pasted into product descriptions by hand. Each one worked on its own. Together they were four points of failure that nobody owned, and every update arrived on a schedule set by somebody else.

The obvious fix was to find the same plugins on the new platform. That would have moved the fragility across with the products. A retyped batch number is wrong eventually, and in this category a wrong number on a page is not a typo. It is the claim the brand is built on.

02 Our approach

UX

A cheaper build puts the age gate in front of everything, including the pages Google reads and the pages customers arrive on. We decided it belonged in front of the purchase instead. A visitor can read about a product, its testing and its restrictions, and is asked to confirm age only when buying.

Technical

Compliance had to be part of the store, not rented from four vendors. State rules would live with the shipping logic, so a change is one edit in one place. Batch number, test date and measured alkaloid content would be product fields rather than sentences somebody retypes. Rules the business owns survive a platform change.

Conversion

The doubt in this category is whether a brand really tests what it sells. So the answer had to sit where the doubt appears, on the product page, next to the add to cart. Shipping eligibility goes there too. A buyer who leaves the page to verify a claim often does not come back.

03 Design & UX

The measured alkaloid content leads the product page, because that number is why this brand exists. Batch number and test date sit under it, then the certificate. Format, flavour and size come after. The required warning copy has its own fixed block rather than being buried in a description, so it reads as information and not as small print.

On a phone the age confirmation is one step, taken at the point of buying and remembered afterwards. Shipping eligibility is checked and shown before the cart, not at the payment step. Nothing about compliance requires a pinch or a scroll to the footer, which is where most stores in this category hide it.

Age gate at the purchase

Gating the whole site hides product and testing pages from search and from first-time visitors, so the check runs when someone buys.

Batch data as fields

Test date and alkaloid content are structured fields, so a new batch updates the page instead of waiting on somebody to edit a description.

Warnings in one block

Required copy comes from a single source and renders the same on every product, so a change of wording is one edit.

Eligibility before the cart

Buyers see whether a product can ship to their state while they are still deciding, not after they have entered card details.

04 Development & technical implementation

Shopify replaced the plugin stack. The state-level rules run as Shopify Functions in the checkout, so an ineligible order cannot be completed even if the customer changes address late. The age check is part of the theme in Liquid, runs once and is remembered, so returning buyers are not asked again on every visit.

Products, variants and lab fields moved with Matrixify, and the customer records moved with their order history. A repeat buyer of one extract should not arrive as a stranger. That part ran late. Years of guest checkouts had left duplicate records for the same people, and every one had to be reconciled by hand before the migration could run.

Klaviyo took the reconciled customer list, so repeat buyers keep their history and can be told when a batch they buy has been retested. The store went live in 7 weeks. Compliance changes now happen in the store admin instead of waiting on a plugin author to release a fix.

05Key solutions

Key solutions.

The parts of the build a visitor would point at.

  1. 01

    Age check built in

The age gate is part of the store, runs at the point of purchase and is remembered, so browsing and search stay open.

  2. 02

    State rules in checkout

Shipping restrictions run with the shipping logic, so an ineligible order cannot be completed and one rule change covers the whole store.

  3. 03

    Per-batch lab data

Batch number, test date and alkaloid content are product fields, so every page shows the batch that is actually in the bottle.

  4. 04

    Customer history preserved

Order history moved with the customer records, so returning buyers keep their past purchases and their place in the email programme.

  5. 05

    Warning copy from one source

Required wording renders from a single template across every product, which removes the retyping that made the old descriptions inconsistent.

  6. 06

    Pages that update themselves

A new batch publishes new figures automatically, so nobody has to remember to edit a description and no customer sees stale numbers.

+25%

Organic traffic

Conversion is up 3.5%. In a category where a buyer leaves the page to check whether a brand tests its product, the gain comes from not making them leave. Batch data, test date and shipping eligibility sit where the question is asked, so fewer sessions end in a search for reassurance.

+3.5%

Conversion

Organic traffic is up 25%. The rankings came across the move and then grew, helped by product pages that carry real batch detail instead of duplicated boilerplate. Search engines and buyers want the same thing here, which is a page that says something specific about the item it is selling.

08In their words

The compliance side used to be four plugins and a prayer. Now it is part of the store, and we stopped worrying about it at checkout.
